Coverage

100 Watts & A Wire Podcast

After historic flooding in St. Louis in 2016, amateur radio volunteers worked the American Red Cross. These volunteers provided communication support for area evacuation shelters. This interview with the 100 Watts and a Wire podcast discusses that work.

South County Times

Each year amateur radio holds across-country open house called Field Day. In their story, "Hamming it up with Ham Radio," the South County Times visited in the midst of a thunderstorm.

Saint Louis Community News

Field Day allows the hobby a chance to shine regionally. The Saint Louis Community News recognized the event was bigger than just one club in their cover story, "Tuning in the world (sic)."

St. Louis Public Radio

The annual Simulated Emergency Test allows St. Louis Metro Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) a chance to practice the skills needed to support communications in an emergency. The October 2016 exercise focused on the aftermath of an earthquake. This interview was featured on air with St. Louis Public Radio and the story was posted on their website.

Institute for Building Technology and Safety (IBTS)

When the IBTS was rewriting their guidelines for working with amateur radio groups, they needed a subject matter expert. The interview was the foundation for this guide.

Television News

Hearst Television

In 2021, many followed the disappearance of 22-year-old Gabby Petino. The news coverage sparked a community conversation, and KOAT launched with weekly “Outcry” series. I was part of that early team, and eventually became the project manager for the effort.

One year later, we recapped the progress of the stories we covered. This Emmy nominated, 30-minute special is an example of a passion project I still follow today.

New Mexico is home to many different types of research. It this story, the state’s USGS lab helped trace mysterious seismic signals back to a landslide triggered by a melting glacier. Read the story here

Covering news in any community is a team effort. In this story I was able to interview the family and develop the script for our anchors to bring attention to a crime in a neighborhood.

The “Forecasting Our Future” series was a Hearst Television initiative. In New Mexico we looked at the drought conditions impacting the state. As the Producer of this 30-minute special, I worked with the weather team to make the science of drought, and the potential solutions, more understandable.

Today In Iowa

This Emmy®Award winning newscast featured severe weather coverage of the Ground Hog Day blizzard of February 2, 2011. The show included multi-city coverage of the storm, the impact on a regional level, several live looks at Groundhog Day festivities in Punxsutawney, PA and regular morning features.

Political Coverage

This January 2, 2012 show aired 24-hours before Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucus. It featured a dual, generic live shot coordinated for our station and four sister-stations. The show was greatly delayed due to NBC’s long coverage of a preceding hockey game. The condensed window required dropping many stories and ad spots during the newscast.

Breaking National News

This show featured good stacking with local and regional crime news. It incorporated breaking national news in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin and political coverage in the 2012 election.
